Breaking Down Drug-Supplement Interactions

Presented by Philip Coco, Pharm D at Saint Peter's University Hospital

A large percentage of Americans are taking herbal supplements simultaneously with prescription medications. These supplements pose the risk of interactions with other medications. Pharmacists should be knowledgable and familiar with the potential interactions these supplements may exhibit with prescription medications, how they should be managed, and how patients should be counseled. Patients admitted to the hospital are often taking alternative medications and they are often continued during the hospitalization. Pharmacists should have a strong understanding of the potential drug interactions as they may potentially contribute to the patient's clinical status.
